As mentioned in my blog entry from November 19, St. Gregory the Great Academy has been partnering with St. Denis School in Manasquan as they continue to repair their school from flooding incurred by Hurricane Sandy. They have lost the use of their entire first floor, which included their cafeteria, chapel, Science Lab, Preschool, Kindergarten, Main Office, and Principal's Office. Before Thanksgiving, we brought two microwaves and two refrigerators to St. Denis to assist them in getting up and running. We also ordered a new nurse's bench for their Nurse's Office and had it shipped to St. Denis directly. Today we delivered a pallet of art supplies for use by the students of St. Denis. Six student ambassadors, Mr. Bonifazi, and I brought approximately 40 boxes of supplies to St. Denis this morning. Everything that we have purchased for St. Denis was made possible by donations from our faculty and staff (over $2,000.00 was collected), a donation from our PTA, and the use of some of our own supply funds.
Here our Student Ambassadors are loading up the supplies at the Preschool Entrance:
Once we arrived at St. Denis School, we delivered the supplies to their gym. The gym is being used as a staging area. All of the items that you see are still left to be treated, but should be salvageable. Last time we were here, the open space on the left side of the gym was filled with furniture and other items that were declared a total loss. When we were here in November, a full 3 weeks after the storm, water was still leaking out of desks, cabinets, and equipment that was in this space.
Here are out Ambassadors after completing the work to load all of the supplies into the gym. They are standing in a damaged section of the school on the first floor. The door behind the students to the right is the damaged and unusable kindergarten classroom:
